Pitkin County Suite
|
| Aspen, Colorado is the county seat for Pitkin County and, arguably, one of the most beautiful places in the state. I didn't want to do the common scenes, nor did I stay strictly within the boundaries of Pitkin, though I didn't stray by much. Interestingly, all four seasons are depicted here, all with snow, an element that rarely disappears at this high elevation. |

First Light, Mt. Sopris

Though this day turned cloudy, it started with a predawn burst of color that threw glorious light onto the clouds that reflected in the river. Though already Spring, the deciduous trees had yet to bud and so created an interesting contrast against the evergreens.

I had set-up in the dark to catch what I call 'Ruby Lighting', those soft pink peripheral rays that precede the dawn like a curtain opening on the day. This ranch is situated at the base of Mt. Sopris, and offers fertile fields for these cutting horses. |

A true fall day in the Holy Cross Wilderness Area nature is not ablaze with color, but subtle and even in places quite grey. This etching is based on a 4 ft by 6 ft painting. I liked the meandering road that cuts through the foreground. |

For this view I had to hike with my painting gear up almost 1,000 feet in the middle of winter in the predawn hours. Although it was only 6 degrees out, I was sweating and exhaling plumes of steamy breathe as I raced to set up my easel just as the sun broke the horizon. I love the polychrome rainbow of colors in this painting that happened between light to shadow.
