Routt County Suite
|
| Home of the magnificent Flat Tops, all these paintings were done within a 40 mile radius of Steamboat Springs. Its rolling hills are still very high and even in the Fall the season when each of these images were painted there is already snow. |

Yampa Cottonwoods

The Flat Top Mountains above the trees disappeared into the approaching storm the day I headed down Ripple Creek Pass to capture this scene. Though it was a cloudy day along the pass that goes from Yampa down into Meeker, there is a richness of color you can't get with full sun.

Yampa is old Colorado, the way it was a hundred years ago. The simple barn in this etching is surrounded not by barbwire but thigh-high grass, dead trees and long shadows. Yampa is, as always, rural, gentle and calm. |

A Little Crimson
|

|
The sculpted Flat Tops, terraced and coated with a fresh dusting of snow, watch over cows grazing in meadows. Like so much of Routt County it is open and undisturbed with little influence of man. |

There are certain years that if the conditions are right the Aspens will go red, even crimson. Some years not only the aspen go red but the ground cover and bushes around them also turn these amazing colors. I saw this particular Fall view standing on the east side of Rabbit Ears Pass.
